THE CHALLENGE

Circular overhang to roof a terrace

Francisco Javier owns a traditionally styled house. On the upper level, the terrace had always been uncovered. When he wanted to give the terrace a new lease of life to shade the upper floor of the house, he encountered a problem: how to roof the semi-circular overhang of the terrace while maintaining its original shape. And for this roofing to be retractable as well. The challenge lay not only in the roof panels but also, and to a large extent, in the beams, which were custom-designed and meticulously planned.

THE KAUMA SOLUTION

Beams and gutter custom-designed

With a thorough measurement process, the design involved the expertise of three departments: design, manufacturing, and installation. We extracted the floor plan measurements and calculated the arc formed by the balcony to obtain the perimeter through which we would develop the structural steel beams.

Thanks to that solution, it’s also possible to cut the polycarbonate panels of the Tactic 120 retractable roof to shape. A design and engineering study is required to calculate the arcs in relation to the number of panels and the shape of the overhang.

Beyond the complexity of the shape of the panels, a special shaped steel gutter had to be created. This galvanised gutter serves a dual purpose: it collects and redirects rainwater. We positioned the downpipe in one of the corners, set back from the arched overhang.
